Okemo Mountain School has created a scholarship fund in honor of Wendy Neal, the former head of school who resigned after an affiliation with OMS that spanned 20 years.
“The outpouring of support for the scholarship in Wendy’s name is a good beginning for what will be a permanent legacy honoring Wendy, and annually supporting an Okemo Mountain School student,” said OMS Board President Diane Mueller.
The Wendy Neal Scholarship will be awarded, beginning in the 2011-2012 school year, to an OMS student who shows financial need and displays a strong work ethic, strong character, dedication, and passion for a winter sport. The scholarship will be awarded annually through an application process administrated by OMS. One recipient will receive $2,000.
“More than $15,000 has been raised,” said OMS Head of School Mariel Meringolo. “Our goal is to raise at least $40,000 of funds restricted to the scholarship, at which point an endowment will be set up to ensure that it can be awarded in perpetuity. If the total raised exceeds $40,000, we will be able to award either multiple scholarships or a greater amount each year to a single recipient.
Fundraising is ongoing and supporters of The Wendy Neal Scholarship Fund can call or email Mariel Meringolo, the current Head of School, for more information at 802-228-1513 or mmeringolo@okemomountainschool.org. Checks payable to Okemo Mountain School (with attn: Wendy Neal Scholarship in the memo) may be sent to: Okemo Mountain School, Attn: Wendy Neal Scholarship, 53 Main Street, Ludlow, VT 05149.
Okemo Mountain School is a 501(c)3. Financial gifts are 100 percent tax-deductible and will support a deserving athlete while honoring Wendy Neal for her commitment to snow sports.
Many successful athletes have trained on the slopes of Okemo Mountain Resort as students at Okemo Mountain School. OMS students are highly motivated individuals and the school addresses the needs of these talented skiers and snowboarders, grades 6 through 12, by providing them with an opportunity to train daily and work toward their competitive athletic goals while maintaining high academic standards.
Academics are a priority during the intense, full-time training and competition schedule. Instructional time is designed with a low student-to-faculty ratio, allowing students to excel at subjects they might otherwise find challenging. The coaching that OMS students receive is unparalleled. An experienced staff of alpine, freeride and snowboard coaches sees to it that each student athlete reaches his or her own personal competitive potential. For athletic training, Okemo Mountain Resort provides on-hill time to the school.
The opportunities for personal growth at OMS are endless. Students at OMS are immersed in an atmosphere encouraging respect for self, peers, and community as well as perseverance and responsibility. For more information about Okemo Mountain School, visit http://www.okemomountainschool.org/.
