Much confusion around the Giorgetti bond vote last night, after our numbers were different than PEG-TV's ... different enough to have them announce the initiative had failed while we had it passing.
PEG uses the same process we do for city polls, which is sending out people to collect the results as the come in at the polling places, so until we got confirmation from the city, I couldn't be sure whose numbers were right, particularly when VPR had the same number as PEG.
I spoke with Michael Valentine from PEG this morning and he said it was a simple transcription error from the volunteer collecting the numbers from the Godnick poll. It's the kind of mistake that could have happened to anybody. VPR had the same number because Nina Keck was at the PEG studio collecting information, so they were both using the same source, making one number look like two.
City Clerk Henry Heck was quick to reach out with the numbers at his disposal once he heard there was confusion, which we all appreciated. As soon as I had verification, I contacted PEG, so the mistake was corrected pretty quickly.
The margin is a little over 3 percent, so it's outside the standard margin for a recount, but it may not be settled.
At this point, we're waiting to hear if the opponents are going to try to force a revote and are checking on the technicalities of what a petition for a bond revote looks like. Check Gordon Dritschilo's city hall blog for the latest on that as the day progresses.
