MONTPELIER — Over the five-hour City Council meeting Wednesday night, residents and business owners listened to city officials discuss the budget, as well as a local option sales tax.
Many of them stood up and spoke their mind.
“We want to look at essential services” for cuts, said Peter Nielson of Montpelier.
Real estate broker Tim Heney said he was hoping to see what the police and fire department budgets would look like with a 3 percent cut.
This attention by residents and business owners on the budget process has been driven in large part by a group called Vibrant and Affordable Montpelier. With a letter signed by more than 150 people, the group has called on city officials to cut 3 percent from next year’s budget.
