MORETOWN — A great-grandmother and two of her great-grandchildren were killed last night when the vehicle they were travelling in slammed into an oncoming propane truck on Route 100 B in Moretown.
Vermont State Police said that the driver, Judith Grandfield, 72, and the two passengers, 7-month-old Jasper Winters and 2-year-old Jackson Winters, all of Moretown, died on impact.
The preliminary police investigation shows that the 2010 Chrysler Town and Country mini-van was traveling southbound on Route 100 B when it crossed the center line and hit an Irving Oil propane truck head-on.
Emergency personnel were unable to reach the victims upon arrival because propane was leaking from the truck, the police press release said.
The driver of the truck, Justin Page, 33, of Websterville, walked away from the accident and was sent to Central Vermont Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.
Grandfield was wearing her seat-belt. Two-year-old Jackson was seat-belted in the front passenger, but was not in a child safety seat. Jasper was in a rear-facing child safety seat behind the driver.
Area residents were evacuated while the propane leak was contained and Route 100 B was closed for approximately 10 hours. Police said there was also a significant diesel leak from one of the truck's saddle tanks.
The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation. The three killed were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for autopsy.
