MONTPELIER — Tonight’s City Council agenda is packed full.
Up for debate: a plan to double the number of signatures required to get an item on the Town Meeting Day ballot; a local option sales tax; a motion that City Manager William Fraser take control of the Recreation Department; a possible vote on the district energy project; and the review of operating budgets for the city administration, fire and police departments.
Getting a petition on the Town Meeting Day ballot now requires signatures from 5 percent of registered voters, or 314 signatures. The change would double that to 10 percent. If the City Council decides to make this change, it would require changing the city’s charter.
