MONTPELIER — In front of a packed Onion River Sports crowd, lawyer, lobbyist and former Montpelier School Board chair John Hollar publicly announced his intention to run for mayor of Montpelier.
Of the 75 or so onlookers and supporters of Hollar's candidacy included city councilors Sarah Jarvis and Angela Timpone, current Montpelier School Board chair Sue Aldrich and former Montpelier mayor and State Senator Ann Cummings.
"I think he's got the right balance," Cummings said of Hollar, who's billing himself as a socially progressive and fiscally conservative candidate.
Andrew Brewer, the owner of Onion River Sports, agrees with that sentiment. He said that while Hollar isn't running against past or present mayors, he thinks Hollar is more fiscally conservative than Mayor Mary Hooper, while he still maintains a strong socially liberal ideology.
That, Brewer said, should fit well with the culture and direction of Montpelier.
