MONTPELIER — The City Council moved the process forward Wednesday night, which actually ran into the wee hours of Thursday, to put two local option sales tax items on the Town Meeting Day ballot.
Creating a local option sales tax requires a city charter change and what the City Council approved this week is the language for the charter change.
The vote was 3 to 2 with City Councilors Alan Weiss and Tom Golonka voting no.
City Manager William Fraser said there is a public hearing scheduled for Jan. 26 to discuss the local options sales tax. The City Council is expected to approve or reject the ballot items at that meeting.
If the City Council puts the local options sales tax on the ballot, and voters approve it, the State Legislature will need to authorize the charter change.
