MONTPELIER — The school board Wednesday told Superintendent Brian Ricca to restore $150,000 to his proposed school budget to prevent cutting teachers at the high school.
Ricca had proposed eliminating the equivalent of about two teaching positions at Montpelier High School across several academic areas. He said the school is overstaffed because the student population is low and is expected to remain low for the foreseeable future.
However, several school board members, including Chairwoman Sue Aldrich, have been reluctant to reduce staff at the high school for fear of backlash from the community.
“People are emotional about this,” Aldrich said Thursday. “They would be mad if these teachers get cut.”
