MONTPELIER — In terms of bridges, the pedestrian bridge near Memorial Drive isn’t very old, but it’s been closed — deemed unsafe and in need of replacement.
It was built in 1998, Director of Public Works Todd Law said, but “it’s all corroded and rotted through.”
Someone from the state of Vermont looked at the bridge and said it didn’t look good, Law said. So the city brought in an engineer who said to shut it down because it wasn’t safe, not even for foot traffic.
It’s not clear why such a relatively new bridge would need to be replaced, Law said.
Some money is available to repair the bridge, according to Law, and over the next couple of weeks, he and his staff will figure out how much it will cost to replace it.
The plan is to put it on the schedule for this year’s construction season.

Everything in Montpelier is falling apart because of a lack of maintenance, streets equipment, buildings. It's about time they replaced Mr. Law
