When my boss Randal asked by write a ski blog, I asked him if I could swear or write about sex? I have never written in a blog or even read one.
But I heard they are "cutting edge" so I thought everything goes. I learned that's not always the case.
But I do ski Killington every weekend and thought I would give it a shot.
Thanks to a lingering storm this week, skiers are currently expriencing great skiing and snowboarding at Killington.Skiing in the woods at Killington Saturday wasn't exactly close to sex (oops), but it was an unvebelievable sensation.
On my IPod, I put on the Dead Kennedy's "Too Drunk to $#@*" (sorry Randal) and headed away from all the crowds - who were skiing scraped-off, open trails. I went to Patsy's and Low Rider where I was right. These two, wooded, tree trails were full of powder.
Unbelievable. It's quiet and peaceful in them there woods. Other than for Neil Young, Nirvana and Aerosmith. It's important to ski slow and respect the strength of a tree. Even tree branches can whack you in the face and give you a badge or honor to wear into the bar.
I find that some powder skiers have already cut trails between the trees. Rats.
The trick now is to ride the trails and jump and turn in the deep powder remaining around the trees where no one has skied. Another concern is getting a ski caught under a tree branch. Otherwise, I find at least 16 inches of powder to bounce in. Priceless. Saturday, I had time for one run on Patsy's and six runs on Low Rider. Too bad for the late start.
Off to the Lookout Bar and Grill for a quick beer before going home.
Just like mentioning Patsy's and Low Rider, I'm afraid to mention the Lookout because I don't want more people there. It is "THE" place on the mountain after skiing. Actually it's the first bar on the left coming down the hill.
And it is wall-to-wall skiers. Women and men from 21 to 50, squished in to a horseshoe shaped playland of peanuts, the best chicken wings on the mountain and freeflowing beer.
Oh well it's 6 pm and the sea of people have let up and moved on to the next club. There is enough space to move through and go home.
I skied Pico on Sunday and the powder was even better! From the historic Pico Ski Club, I went to the Summit Glades with "Brian." The snow was skied off but soft on the edges. Surprisingly an attracted woman named Cindy decided to hook up with us in the powder and ski with us. The Chevy Chase/Christy Brinkly look on my face was pretty obvious.
Back to reality. The rest of the day, I skied next to the out-of-bounds side of Sidewinder off the Outpost chair and had snow slides up to my waist. Again, priceless and one benefit of living in Vermont and being able to hit the powder while it's ripe.
