An 82-year-old Weathersfield man died Sunday after crashing his snowmobile. Richard Jarvis was pronounced dead on private property on Route 131 near the intersection of Thrasher Road at about 6:34 p.m.
Ascutney Fire Department had initially responded to the scene to assist with the search of an overdue snowmobiler and found the victim deceased, according to police.
Jarvis got into a single snowmobile crash while he was on a Yamaha Excel III, model year mid-1980s, police reported.
Investigators from the Vermont State Police, from both Field Force and Bureau of Criminal Investigations, responded and determined the victim had lost control of the snowmobile and struck a tree, which caused fatal injuries.
The Office of the Chief Medical was contacted and responded to the scene. After a thorough investigation, the death was ruled accidental. It was determined that alcohol does not appear to be a factor, but it is possible, according to police, that a mechanical failure may have caused the crash.
