OVGC JUNE 29 MEN’S LEAGUE RESULTS

The Okemo Valley Golf Club Men's League’s race for the Commissioner's Cup continues to be a tight one, with teams trading the top spots from week to week. This week was no different as Ludlow Insurance grabbed the top spot for the night. Roger Danyew, Ron Bixby, Herb Eddy and Sonny Bragg combined to win 23 holes. The second spot went to M&M Excavating, with Charlie Dickerman, Mike O'Neil, Walt Spinrad and Bruce Verdrager winning  21.5 holes. The third spot went to Willie Dunn's. Jack Collins, Paul Doyle, Bob Carboneau and John Goffinet combined for 20 holes won. The closest to the pin winners were Jack Hurley on the 4th hole, and Walt Spinrad on the 8th hole.

OVGC HOSTS VSWGA TOURNAMENT

On Monday, June 28, Okemo Valley Golf Club hosted a tournament celebrating the Vermont State Women’s Golf Association’s 80th Anniversary.  Two teams from the New Hampshire Women’s Golf Association attended to show their support and honor the working relationship that has existed through the years. In addition to the two N.H. teams, 64 women from Vermont competed in three flights of competition.

CCCA Announces Photo Contest Winners

The professional judging has concluded in the annual photo contest sponsored by the Cavendish Community and Conservation Association.  The three judge panel selected winners in three age categories.  Noelle Gignoux took first prize in the 5 to 12 year old group for her photo “Make a Wish” and Seth Matlofsky won first among the 13 to 18 year olds for “Path of Serenity”.  In the over 18 group, George Timko was selected for first prize with “Lupines and Lillies” (see above) and Mary McCallum was chosen runner up for Taste of Summer.”  Two photos were awarded honorable mention – Tim O’Donoghue for “Tiger Swallowtail on Lilacs”, and Amanda Gross for “Callosamia Promethea.”

All photographs had to be taken in Cavendish, including Proctorsville by a full or part time Cavendish resident.  The theme of the contest this year was “Vermont's Beauty through a View of Cavendish.”

As well as vying for top prize, each photograph was entered in a contest for inclusion in the CCCA 2011 calendar.  This year marks the sixth year of the CCCA’s annual calendar, and the third year of the annual photo contest.  Calendar photos are selected by vote of Cavendish residents, and the photo with the most votes receives the Popular Choice Award.  The calendar choices will be announced shortly after voting is completed on July third.

CCCA has already announced that the next contest will occur in May 2011, so Cavendish residents should be pointing their cameras around town and taking their best shot.

OKEMO AWARDS NEARLY $10,000 TO SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

Okemo Mountain Resort’s Tim and Diane Mueller are pleased to announce the recipients of the 2010 Okemo Mountain Resort Scholarship Awards.  

Eleven scholarships, totaling $9,900, were awarded to students who have worked at Okemo, or who are the dependents of Okemo employees. Criteria used to select the scholarship recipients included academic achievement, co-curricular involvement and the composition of an essay. 

“Education is the cornerstone of our future,” says Diane Mueller. “Tim and I wholeheartedly support the Okemo Scholarship Program as a way to contribute to the community and to assist young scholars as they embark on educational endeavors that will hopefully lead them back home again so they can lead full lives and improve the community for their own children.”

Okemo Mountain Employee Scholarships:

Corrine Cahill, of Worcester, Mass., worked in ticket sales at Okemo. She is majoring in International Development and Social Change at Clark University.

Tiffanie DeRosia, of Springfield, Vt., is studying Criminal Justice/Sociology at the University of Vermont. She worked in The Roundhouse at Jackson Gore.

Wyatt Pedigo, of West Putney, Vt., worked at Epic. He is an International Politics major at George Washington University.

Brandy Todt, of Ludlow, Vt., worked at Okemo’s Jackson Gore Inn. She is attending Faith School of Technology where she is an Art and Illustration major. 

Okemo Mountain Employee Dependent Scholarships:
 
Lindsey Bolduc, of Springfield, Vt., graduated from Springfield High School and will be attending Lesley University as an Education major. She is the daughter of Lenny Bolduc, who works in Okemo’s Accounting Department.

Audrey Kinney, of Brownsville, Vt., graduated from Windsor High School and will be attending the University of Vermont. She is the daughter of Eb Kinney, Okemo’s vice president of mountain operations.

Cody Normyle, of Ludlow, Vt., is studying Corporate Finance Accounting at Bentley University. He is the son of Okemo Lodging Director Michael Normyle.

Margaret Vogul, of South Acworth, N.H., graduated from Fall Mountain Regional High School and is attending Sacred Heart University as an Elementary Education major. She is the daughter of Robert Vogul, who works in Okemo’s Demo Center.

Creative Endeavors Scholarships:

Kristan Corbin, of Ludlow, Vt., is studying Graphic Design at New Hampshire University. She is the daughter of Night Custodian Michelle Chapman.

Bonnie MacPherson, of East Wallingford, Vt., is studying weaving techniques at the Harrisville Weaving Center. She is Okemo’s director of public relations.

Okemo Memorial Scholarships:

Kaitlynd Palmer, of Mount Holly, Vt., is this year’s recipient of the John F. Mueller Scholarship Award. Formed by the Okemo Mountain Resort staff in memory of Dr. Mueller, this award is presented to a student, employed by Okemo or Mount Sunapee Resort, who is pursuing a career in medicine. Palmer is pursuing a career in the nursing field at the Community College of Vermont. She worked in Okemo’s Base 68 cafeteria.

Okemo Young Artist Faculty

Internationally acclaimed musicians have brought their artistic performances to the Ludlow Town Hall Auditorium each Saturday night at 7:30 through July 10, while sharing their teaching skills with gifted young musicians in the Okemo Young Artists' Program (OYAP). Pictured (from left to right) are faculty members David Bowlin, violin; Conor Nelson, flute; Minna Rose Chung, cello; Akiko Konishi and Debbie Maslowski, pianists.  OYAP, now in its fifth season in Ludlow, is directed by Marko Dreher, a faculty member of the Music Institute of Chicago.  In addition to its Saturday evening concerts in the Ludlow Town Hall Auditorium, the students of OYAP are featured in concerts at the United Church of Ludlow on Tuesdays and Sugar House on Okemo Mountain on Wednesday.  All concerts begin at 7:30 pm.

BANJO DAN & MID-NITE PLOWBOYS AT JACKSON GORE JULY 2

Okemo Mountain Resort’s Jackson Gore Outdoor Music Series will welcome Banjo Dan and the Mid-nite Plowboys on Friday, July 2.

Banjo Dan and the Mid-nite Plowboys have consistently delivered some of the finest, most dynamic and original bluegrass music ever heard in this corner of the country. With countless performances under their belts and an extensive catalog of acclaimed recordings, the Plowboys have developed strong name recognition, a large fan base, and a reputation as top-notch entertainers. It's a reputation built on soulful lead singing, spot-on harmonies, fiery picking and a stage show full of energy, variety and humor.

On Friday nights throughout the summer season, the lawn in the courtyard at Okemo’s Jackson Gore Inn is transformed into an outdoor concert venue featuring popular local and regional entertainers. Admission to the Jackson Gore Outdoor Music Series is free and the grounds open at 5 p.m. Concerts are slated to run from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Families are welcome and all attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or picnic blankets. In case of rain, the concerts will move indoors. Dining options include fresh-from-the-grill burgers and hot dogs, or full-service dining with an al fresco seating option at Jackson Gore’s Coleman Brook Tavern.

OKEMO YOUNG ARTISTS CLASSICAL MUSIC FESTIVAL

Talented young students and faculty of the Okemo Young Artists’ Program are in their second week of exciting chamber and solo music in Ludlow. Celebrating a month-long series of free classical concerts, they began with a Gala Opening Night performance at their Sugar House Lodge training facility on Okemo Mountain.  The series continues with four weeks of concerts every Saturday (Ludlow Town Hall Auditorium), Tuesday (United Church of Ludlow), and Wednesday (Sugar House Lodge). The festival runs through the Grand Finale performance on Friday, July 16 (Sugar House Lodge) and the public is invited to all concerts, which mark the group’s 5th season at Okemo Mountain. All events are free. Goodwill donations are welcome and applied toward scholarship funds.

The Okemo Young Artists' Program provides an intense musical environment in a beautiful setting at the Okemo Mountain Resort. An exceptional group of 35 students from across the USA and Canada are selected each year to study with world-renowned faculty. Students receive bi-weekly private lessons and chamber music coachings, weekly guest artist masterclasses, and performance opportunities. The students, ages 10-21, include winners of national and international competitions and are preparing for careers as professional musicians on the violin, viola, cello, flute or piano.

Great Books with Great Prices for a Great Cause

Book lovers won’t want to miss this fantastic sale!  Come to Mt. Holly, Vermont on Saturday, July 3rd  from 9 am to 4:00 pm.   The Mount Holly Library will have great books at great prices.  

Generous donations have filled the big barn with over a thousand books that will interest book lovers.  All genres are represented including old and recent publications.  

You won’t be able to beat the bargains you’ll find on this sale.  Take route 103 to the flashing light in Mount Holly.  The big yellow barn on the Southeast corner of Rt. 103 and Hortonville Road.  We hope to see you rain or shine.  For further information, call 259-3707.

Cavendish Concert on the Green–July 7th

The Cavendish Community and Conservation Association wants to remind everyone that the annual summer music series kicks off on Wednesday, July 7th at 6:00 p.m. on the Proctorsville Green with Chris Kleeman, the Vermont based master blues singer and legendary song stylist.

A performer of great energy and focus, Kleeman provides a unique opportunity to see and hear the real thing; an artist of high energy and gritty musical performance, who's been matched up to perform in shows with musicians such as B.B. King, Taj Mahal, John Hammond, George Thorogood, Johnny Winter, Leon Redbone, ... the list goes on and on.

This will be the first of six concerts held again this year on Wednesday nights in July and August.  All concerts are free and open to the public, so join your neighbors and friends in front of the gazebo on the green.  Bring a comfortable chair, a blanket, maybe a picnic, or just kick back and relax on the grass.

The summer concert series has a long history in Proctorsville and many area residents reserve Wednesday evenings to listen to the live music.  As always, the concerts will be held rain or shine, and will move to the Cavendish town elementary school in case of inclement weather.
