Cavendish Summer Concerts Announced

The Cavendish Community and Conservation Association announced that the annual summer music series on the Proctorsville Green will be held again this year on Wednesday nights in July and August.  All concerts are free and open to the public and will start at 6:00 p.m., so grab your lawn chair and a cold drink, and join your friends and neighbors to enjoy plenty of rollicking good music from the gazebo.

The lineup will begin on July 13th with the legendary Chris Kleeman and will continue on July 20th with the sounds of Union Street.  On July 27th Rick Reddington will play, then on August 3rd the always popular Gypsy Reel will appear, and capping the summer series on August 10th will be the sounds of Rutland’s own Voodoo Alien Blues Band.

The summer concert series has a long history in Proctorsville and many area residents reserve Wednesday evenings to listen to the live music.  This is the second year that CCCA has taken on the task of coordinating the events and they are happy to continue the tradition.  As always, the concerts will be held rain or shine, and will move to the Cavendish town elementary school just down the street in case of inclement weather.  If you would like to help CCCA would like to hear from you.  Call Robin at 226-7736 to volunteer or for more information on the concerts.

OVGC LADIES’ LEAGUE RESULTS FOR JUNE 29

The ladies were back in action as the Okemo Valley Golf Club Ladies’ League took to the links Wednesday evening, June 29. The format was a team-of-two best for the A and B players, and a team-of-two scramble for the C and D players. Grabbing the top spot this week was The Ornament Emporium team. Pam Cruickshank, Pat Roelants, Jeanette Conderino and Pam Bruno combined for a score of 86. First Line Security took second with Marilyn Reed, Martha Damone, Joan Kattalia and Pam Plumb combining to shoot an 86. Third place went to Ludlow Insurance. Sue Horsman, Mary Lou Shaw, Anne Matulonis and Nancy Timmerman shot an 87. Closest to the pin winners were Sue Horsman on the 4th hole, and Peg C. Margiotta on the 8th hole.

MASS. MAN MAKES HOLE-IN-ONE AT OVGC

On Friday, June 24, Tyler Hill, of Newton, Mass., made a hole-in-one at Okemo Valley Golf Club. Hill aced the 14th hole, from the green tee 205 yards away from the hole, using his three wood. Chris Lesky witnessed the amazing feat.

Hill’s name will be engraved on a hole-in-one plaque, that hangs inside the Okemo Valley Golf Club clubhouse, to honor the fortunate few who have had the exhilarating experience of making a hole-in-one at OVGC.

OVGC MEN’S LEAGUE RESULTS FOR JUNE 28

The Men’s League at Okemo Valley Golf Club has passed the halfway mark in the season. As temperatures rise and summer progresses, the race for the top spot becomes tighter. Grabbing the glory for the first time this season was M&M Excavating. Mark Kattalia, Mike O’Neil, Jack Hurley and Jim Wallis combined to win 22 holes. Second place went to UBS Rutland. Jack Collins, Herb Eddy, Larry Plumb and Tom Harris combined to win 22 holes. Ludlow Insurance took third place with Ron Bixby, Charlie Dickerman, Bob Carboneau and John Boehrer winning 20 ½  holes. Closest to the pin winners were Randy Nowak on the 4th hole and JP Rousse on the 8th hole.

Fletcher Farm Arts and Crafts Classes now in Session

What are you doing this summer? We offer classes for beginners to advanced students in Fine Art, Basketry, Jewelry, Decorative Painting and more. Try your hand at Woodcarving, or Stained Glass. We also offer the finest Fiber Arts classes including Weaving, Felting, Shaker Rug Making, Punch Needle Rug Hooking to name a few. Quilting is all the rage these days so take a look at our fine classes. We also offer classes for Young Artists ages 7-17, these very popular day camps fill up fast so don’t hesitate to register.

Different Picture of the "Hole in the Wall Gang"

 

When one thinks of Butch Cassidy and partner, the Sundance Kid, it is usually involves guns, bank robberies, or jumping off cliffs.  However, the above photo displays the "rough and tough" western characters in a much more refined pose.  Actually it's a photo of Kathleen Ross and Robert Redford, standing, with Paul Newman, hat properly displayed across his chest, seated in the roles they play in the classic western, "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid".  FOLA (Friends of Ludlow Auditorium) will be featuring this film on Thursday, July 7 at 7 PM at the Ludlow Town Hall Auditorium.  The film, winner of many awards, is part of FOLA's "1st Thurday" film program.  Per FOLA policy, these films are free and open to everyone; donations are appreciated to cover the cost of the film and equipment usage.  Incidentally, as formal as the above photograph is, you may still note that Redford, as the Sundance Kid, still carries his guns in ready condition.  One of the interesting things about the Sundance Kid is how he got that name.  Apparently, in his teens, he was arrested in Sundance, Wyoming.  There after, since no one knew his real name, he was referred to as "the kid from Sundance".  At any rate, it is a delightful twist on the conventional western plot line with an ending that some still claim was not the real ending of this pair of fancy desperados.  For information, call 228-7239.

Successful Gala Pushes BRAM Over the Top for Elevator

The Gala dinner and silent auction sponsored by Black River Academy Museum (BRAM) recently at the Epic Restaurant at Okemo's Solitude Lodge enabled BRAM to reach its fund-raising goal for an elevator in its new wing.  According to BRAM Treasurer Sharon Combes-Farr, the event raised over $10,000.  That amount, coupled with the totally-matched $50,000 challenge grant from Richard Nye, plus an additional award from Jim and Anita Alic, translated into over $118,000 for the capital fund campaign aimed at acquiring an elevator and associated electronic needs.  The elevator will now allow all visitors to the museum to easily view BRAM's impressive exhibits and programs of local history on all three floors of the building.  When the elevator is installed, BRAM will be totally ADA-compliant.  Georgia Brehm, BRAM's executive director, noted that this will enable area school students to see and touch "an important part of their heritage".  She also noted that this will permit the museum to attract visitors who had been unable to take advantage of the musuem because of access problems.  Pictured above, from left to right, are Fran Devine, Amber Nye, Will Nye, and Carol Devine chatting at the event while people in the background examine and bid on some of the silent auction items.

FML Third Thursday Meeting July

The Third Thursday program of the Friends of the Library in Ludlow will take place on Thursday evening July 21st at 7pm. We are very pleased to announce that the program will feature  a long time resident of Andover, Thomas Brooks. Mr. Brooks whose family was originally from Middlebury has spent much time in Weston and Andover having come  to the area as a child. Mr. Brooks was a rifleman in the 10th Mountain Division and fought in 1943-1945 in northern Italy. After the war, he attended Harvard University and became an author of six books, primarily on business and labor history. He has also written for Commentary, The New York Times Magazine, New York and many other publications.

Mr. Brooks will discuss his book "North of Rome, 1944-1945" whose foreward was written by Senator Robert Dole who also fought in this theater of war. After the invasion of France, the Allied armies in Italy found themselves in a forgottten war theater. Until now their eleven month saga of bitter conflict and gallant sacrifice has been ignored. The fall of Rome did not end the campaign. Although the press was no longer paying attention to the action north of Rome, the continue Allied offensive met a fierce German resistance.Their record of courage and sacrifice is described in this long overdue, comprehensive, fascinating account.

LPC-TV Annual Meeting June 30

LPCTV will be holding its Annual Meeting on Thursday, June 30 at 7PM. All community members are invited to attend. We will meet at LPCTV, behind Black River High School (43 Main St. in Ludlow), and walk over to the Ludlow Community Center.

There will be a brief business meeting which will include:
- elections for Board of Directors
- vote on new budget (GY12)
- "state-of-the-station" report

We will then walk over next door to the future home of LPCTV to tour the facility and show off our plans.

This is an exciting time for LPCTV, as we prepare to move from the little studio in the Ludlow Elementary School into a state-of-the-art media center. Work on the new facility is expected to start next month. We will also be celebrating our 10th anniversary later this summer with a BBQ and tour of the work-in-progress.
