The 12th Annual RiverSweep is booked for Sept. 10th this year, making the date very simple: 9/10/11. Come to HQ in either Springfield (Citizens Bank drive-up near the footbridge in the Plaza) or Ludlow (gazebo on the town green in Veterans Park near the library) between 8am and noon, pick up work gloves and trash bags, refreshments and a great cup of coffee. Head out to pick up junk, bring it back and let the BRAT know what you collected as well as what you left in (too heavy, too awkward, etc.) and then enjoy a free lunch and a thank-you tee shirt!
Stay informed about all things BRATty: Check out a free local weekly paper called The Compass -- not only do I write a humble "Get To Know Springfield" column about goings-on in town, but I've started a new bi-weekly column entitled "River Ripples!" Sponsored by the generous folks at the Springfield Food Co-Op, "River Ripples" delivers details of all things BRATty -- what we're up to, how to join in the fun, and much more. My column shares space with one sponsored by HB Plumbing and written by my friend Jan Lambert, who writes about bird-related topics in an Ascutney Mountain Audubon Society respect. The paper is free, and is chock-full of community articles, photos and tidbits.
The list of folks jumping into the Adopt-the-River program is growing! Union Street School's fifth grade class, Ludlow's Fletcher Memorial Library, Farm & Wilderness Camp, the Edgar May Recreation Center, Springfield Co-Op, Health Care and Rehab Services (HCRS), are among the first organizations to get on board and pick a project to celebrate the river and help keep it healthy. Give me a shout if you have any ideas on how you can get your feet wet by adopting the river!
We're still looking for video footage and still shots that show a favorite spot on the river: wildlife, water, plant life, swimmers, anglers, boaters...you name it. Historic photos are welcome, too! We're putting together a short video with the help of River Bank Media, Inc.
Recycling efforts have grown in our attempt to keep junk out of our waterways: cell phones and empty ink cartridges go through Funding Factory as a way to raise funds for our programs; drop them at Springfield Radio Shack in the Plaza or contact me for other ways to ship them. Hard plastic caps (such as those found on shampoo, soda and detergent bottles) are being collected and shipped to the Aveda company for their recycling program. Let's stay in touch to see how we can work together to keep more junk out of our rivers and landfills!
Rain barrels are getting hot -- for a donation of just $35, a 55-gallon bright blue rain barrel is our "thank you"! We'll cut it and outfit it with a brass faucet, sieve for leaf-collection, and overflow hose, and we'll even provide suggestions for installing and decorating your barrel or barrels. Reserve yours THIS WEEK, so we can pick them up and prepare them -- then pick yours up on Saturday, August 27th at Riverside Middle School, during our Bug Hunt from 9 - 11 a.m. If that pick-up time does not work for you, we'll work something out.
Speaking of Bug Hunts, bring the kids for a walk on the wet side. Meet at Riverside Middle School on Saturday, August 27 from 9 - 11 a.m. as we meet the denizens of the depths of the Black River! This is a free, fun, family-friendly event for kids of all ages.
FINALLY...Let's get historical! I'll be hosting a walking tour of Springfield's historical industrial buildings starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 24. We've pulled out all kinds of stuff from the river over the years, some of which reflects the heritage of Springfield as a mill-town and tool-making industrial mecca. The walk will start at the Comtu Park on Main St, overlooking the upper falls. We'll walk a 2-1/2 mile circuit over Comtu Falls, down to the State Office parking lot, up Park Street, down Pearl Street, over the Plaza footbridge and back to the Comtu Park. There is NO fee, but pre-registration is highly recommended, so give me a shout if you're interested.
