Okemo Mountain School raised nearly $8,000 during a benefit golf tournament at Okemo Valley Golf Club on Friday, Sept.16. Proceeds from the tournament went to local flood relief efforts. The participants, most connected with the school and the greater Okemo community, enjoyed a scramble format under sunny skies.
The first-place team was led by Richard White, of Saratoga, N.Y., who coaches youth ski racing at Okemo on the weekends. His teammates, also from Saratoga, were Tommy Uccelino, Kirk Sisson, and Mike Manning. The second-place team was also comprised of some Okemo Race Program coaches: Lucas Ladden, of Ludlow, Vt., JD Hoffmann, of Burlington, Vt., and JD's parents Jim and Chris Hoffmann of Southbury, Conn. The third- place team was led by Okemo's own Diane Mueller and included Tim Kangas, Tim Reynolds, and Karen Reynolds.
Generously donated prizes were awarded to the top three teams in the tournament. Businesses that provided donations were: The Okemo Valley Golf Club, Tater Hill Golf Club, The Quechee Club, The Woodstock Inn and Resort, The Wine and Cheese Depot, The Downtown Grocery, The Totem Pole Ski Shop, The Boot Pro, The Castle Hill Resort and Spa, Richard White of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, and The Marriot Residence Inn in Portsmouth, N.H.
Although the tournament was initially slated to raise money to support Okemo Mountain School’s Building Fund and the current renovations being completed, the school decided to donate the proceeds to local flood relief efforts after Tropical Storm Irene created so much local damage.
“I was so grateful for the fact that our school had not been affected by the flood, yet so sad for all of those that were so severely impacted, that I desperately wanted to find a way to help. We were already planning this golf tournament and decided that donating the proceeds would be a great way to assist in the recovery of our community,” said Head of School Mariel Meringolo.
The nearly $8,000 was distributed among several local organizations conducting flood relief efforts: Black River Good Neighbors, the Cavendish Baptist Church, The Tyson Congregational Church and the Ludlow Rotary Club.
