The Black River Academy Museum Players will present their annual Christmas production on December 9 and 10 at 6:00 p.m. at the museum on High Street in Ludlow, now accessible to the handicapped. The Players will recapture the spirit of the 1940s, when families gathered round to listen to “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens on a massive Philco radio set. The Players will bring the radio show to life in a recreated studio, complete with the actors’ interpretations of Dickens’ immortal characters and authentic sound effects produced right on stage.
Ghostly wails, rattling chains, sounds of holiday parties, ominous wind and creaking doors will accompany the voices of all Dickens’ characters in the halls of the museum. Tom Field of Springfield will portray Scrooge, the heartless miser who discovers the true meaning of the holiday season after a Christmas Eve haunting. Frank Wadelton of Bellows Falls will play Bob Cratchit, Scrooge’s mistreated clerk, and Paul Faenza of Mount Holly will narrate the play.
Pictured above is the cast of thousands as they rehearse the many roles and audio effects for the play. Front row: Frank Wadelton, Tom Field, and Paul Faenza as major characters in “A Christmas Carol.” Back row: Sound effects crew playing the additional 25 characters - Molly Ferris, April Moore, Bailey Matteson, Laney Wadelton, Lynne Cannon, Linda Dunworth, Mike Wooten.
Linda Dunworth and Bailey Matteson of Ludlow, Molly Ferris and Lynne Cannon of Chester, Lanie Wadelton of Bellows Falls, and Mike Wooten and April Moore of Springfield will play multiple roles: the ghosts, the Cratchit family, carolers, street sellers, and Scrooge’s long-lost childhood friends and associates.
The show will conclude with a sing-along of favorite Christmas songs accompanied by pianist Cindy Wooten, and will be followed by free refreshments provided by the museum.
