It still seems strange to me that Pete has been gone for just shy of a year-and-a-half. Crazy. He is still missed so much not only by our staff here at the Times Argus, but clearly by the community. And by community, I mean all of central Vermont.
Friday, June 18, is The Pete Hartt Classic - First Annual Basketball Downtown Jam in Stowe, the community closest to Pete's heart. There has already been a Pete Hartt Award given out at league banquets this past winter, and this basketball event is another way people are keeping my good friend's memory alive.
And for the record, those who knew Pete know he is fuming over the attention. But he loved it. Quick aside: Pete kept his birthday a well-hidden secret until everyone else in the newsroom's birthday was fussed over. We will certainly never forget July 17th and its significance now.
The event will take place at the Memorial Park Basketball Courts from 3-9 p.m. Friday evening and the proceeds benefit the Stowe School Sports programs. Those interested in participating are encouraged to bring a team or just themselves. There will be youth and adult competitions in foul shooting, 3-on-3 and 3-point shooting in addition to a free clinic for young players, an adult slam dunk competition and full-court pick-up sessions.
The event is sponsored by the Stowe Parks and Recreation department, 253-6138. The event can also be found on Facebook events, the Pete Hartt Classic. People can also contact Neil KOrn at 802-760-7679 or neil@stoweaccess.com.
