Early in the New England Collegiate Baseball League season, I attended a game as a fan (!) with a friend, and halfway through the game we both had the same thought: Do the players pick their entrance music, played when they come up to bat?
The answer is yes.
The choices are, as one would expect, as unique and varied as the players' backgrounds. These kids come from all over the country - as does their taste in tunes.
It makes me feel a bit old to admit this, but I can't tell what half the songs are that the players choose because I can't understand the lyrics. And it speaks to my Vermont upbringing that I recognized all of the country songs chosen.
A few that I could decipher:
Johnny Mishu - George Strait's "It just comes natural." It is indeed a natural choice for Mishu, who is from the go-to place for country music fans - Nashville, Tenn.
Doug Freeman - California Swag District's "Teach me how to Dougie." I don't think I need to explain why this one made me giggle. But I will point out that in last Friday's home game against Mystic, the third baseman did a little dance while Freeman approached the plate. Funny, funny stuff.
Dan Kemp - Not sure what the song is, exactly, but it's another country tune. Kemp is from New England (Sturbridge, Mass.), so it still makes sense.
Tyler Young - Ginuwine's "My pony." I'm not going to try and guess, but I'm sure there's a story there.
Any baseball players out there care to share the reasoning behind their extrance music? Does it get annoying hearing the start of the same song up to 4 or 5 times a night all summer long?
