One of the easiest decisions to be made after this winter sports season was who to name as our 2012 Times Argus Gymnast of the Year: freshman phenom Tyra Izor ran away with the award, and I can't wait to see what she does over the next three years.
That said, there was a bunch of quotes about those on the honorable mention list that could not make the print edition. I still want these athletes to get their due, so here it all is. All of these quotes are from Harwood gymnastics coach Anissa Touchette:
Cecilia Baker - does not go year round, junior, scored mid-8s for us all season long. Bars she was high 7s, low 8s, tough to do as a seasonal gymnast. Floor 8s, second-highest score in states on floor, 8.5, a lot of our girls peaked at vault and floor at states. quiet leader, leads by example, hard worker, she comes in and just knows exactly what she needs to work on, wants to perfect everything, doesn’t have years of training like other club gymnasts do,but seems like she does because she throws a lot of the same tricks they do or is working toward them
Haley Aylward - all-around gymnastics is not easy to do, sophomore, soli dfor us on beam all year long, she was one I put toward the end. she had rock-solid nerves on the beam, learned a new dismount this year that boosted her score almost another point, worked on perfecting it all the time. vault she peaked on at states, highest score 8.275 on vault in states
Seniors Taylor Garrand - she made a huge comeback and committment to the team this year, such a leader, on top of everyone, even the coaches - on top of worrying about her own performances she makes sure everyone knows when they’re up, she worked really hard for the team
Ally Baitz - she’s an amazing dancer, floor and beam, really strong on beam
Congratulations, gymnasts!
