Former Vermont Star A.J. Pollock Called Up by Diamondbacks

Centerfielder A.J. Pollock was called up from Triple-A Reno to the Arizona Diamondbacks today. He started in center field for the Diamondbacks as they hosted the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Pollock, a Notre Dame product via Hebron, CT who starred for the Vermont Mountaineers in 2007, becomes the second NECBL alumnus to make his Major League Debut this year. San Francisco Giant and former Newport Gull pitcher Dan Otero broke with his Big League club on Opening Day.
Pollock got his chance to join a talented D'Backs outfield on a day when Chris Young injured his shoulder crashing into a wall while making a catch, and Geoff Blum was forced to go on the Disabled List with a pulled muscle.
In a dozen games with Reno, Pollock was hitting .340 with four steals. He helped lead Double-A Mobile to a Southern League championship last year by hitting .307, clubbing 41 doubles and stealing 36 bases.
Pollock, who played for Team USA last Fall, showed his propensity for base theft and gap power back as a freshman for Vermont. He lead the NECBL with 15 doubles, and ranked in the League's top six in average (.348) and steals (13). He will be the fourth Mountaineer to appear in the Big Leagues, joining fellow outfielder Darin Mastroianni and pitchers David Carpenter and Rob Delaney.
Pollock becomes the 78th NECBL alumnus to reach the Major Leagues, and the fourth from the 2007 season. The NECBL congratulates Pollock on this special accomplishment! |
