The Colorado Rockies are on their way to defeating the San Diego Padres in San Diego (I probably just jinxed them, but that's not the point anyhoo). But it's how the game started that will be of interest to central Vermonters: Former Mountainer Christain Friedrich pitched the first six innings, allowing two runs (one earned), five hits, one walk and struck out seven. Because the Rockies are an NL team, Friedrich got three at bats, going 0-for-3 with two strikeouts.
Friedrich won an NECBL title with the Mountaineers in 2006 and was drafted by Colorado in 2008. Vermont Mountaineers GM Brian Gallagher called me to give me the heads up on Friedrich's performance, saying that he couldn't watch the game because he doesn't have MLBTV, but he was paying attention to it on his phone. Not even a busy day on the road stopped him - he was safe, he said, pulling over often to check the updates on his phone. Vermonters care about their players - it's hard to call any of them "former Mountaineers" when everyone clearly follows them like they're still here. Very, very cool.
Here's a photo the AP took from the third inning of this afternoon's game:
Pretty awesome stuff. Go Mountaineers! Go Friedrich!
