VT State Championship Series Rolls
Competitors To Return to Barre’s Thunder Road for Governor’s Cup
Barre, VT – The 2012 Vermont State Stock Car Championship Series heats up just in time for the crown jewel of the four race series: The VT State Lottery Commission Governor ’s Cup 150 at Thunder Road. Milton’s Brent Dragon leads the swarming field to the “Nation’s Site of Excitement” on Thursday, July 12 with a slim 6-point lead over multi-time Thunder Road Champion Phil Scott.
Both drivers have their sites set on the newly formatted state crown title. “To think that the organizers have put together a series to decide Vermont honors has made it unique and special for us all,” said Scott. “Now we just have to win it,” he laughed.
Dragon concurred saying, “Making the state crown a series like this really adds some prestige to the whole thing. It’s good to be on top, but we know we’ve still got two more to go,” he finished.
Race 1 of the series at Thunder Road saw Barre sensation Nick Sweet pick up the resounding victory over Scott with Dragon in tow for third, but the tide turned when the series headed to Devil’s Bowl Speedway. After losing a tire, Sweet struggled in the back at the fast half-mile, leaving the points lead exposed for Scott and Dragon.
Scott quickly capitalized on the misfortune, claiming the pole position for the event and managing a seventh place finish to remain second overall, but Dragon took it one step further. Nearly winning the event, he notched his second straight third-place finish, and it was enough to claim a 6-point lead over the Lt. Governor.
Maine invader Ricky Rolfe remains the only “outsider” still within the top fifteen, and looks to steal the Vermont State Championship Crown away from Vermont’s favorite sons. Mad River Valley’s Brooks Clark and defending Thunder Road Champion Dave Pembroke complete the top five. Sweet, ACT Rookie Jimmy Hebert, Joey Becker, Jim Morris, and Chip Grenier remain in the top ten.
ACT Late Model Championship stock cars, Bond Auto Tiger Sportsmen, and Allen Lumber Street Stocks will once again fill the pits this Thursday, July 12. Qualifying for race three of the four Vermont State Championship Series events rolls off with a 6:00 post time at Barre’s Thunder Road for the VT Governor’s Cup presented by the VT State Lottery Commission. Adult admittance is just $15, kids 12 and under are free.
