WRAPPING UP MAY 2010
No one has breathed a word about terrorism when talking about the Goof in the Gulf. But if I were an unemployed and restless young man in Badintentionstan, I would certainly be thinking about oil rigs. The farther out we build them, the nearer they may be to other, planned disasters. At the very least, they would cost us highly in naval forces, which may be needed to fend off possible attacks by suicide divers released from Iran’s submarine fleet.

Is a broom a dispersant when it sweeps dirt under the rug? Environmental basics: There is no place to call “Away.”

Guess we can kiss the phrase “pouring oil on troubled waters” goodbye for a while.

Penalty for the BP executives: five years of hand-washing nutria.

We admire predators. We detest parasites. Which inhabit Wall Street?
-----------------
Speaking of parasites: the areas of Vermont that had a serious frost in mid-May may have avoided the usual seasonal hatch of mosquitoes as a result. They were bad here in Middlebury early in the month, but then they were gone, and probably thanks to fairly dry weather since, have not reappeared in force.
Also speaking of parasites, on Memorial Day I walked past several wayside beds of blue flowers, and observed numerous bumblebees at work on the blossoms. I did not see a single honey bee, either there or on any other flower.
