The Refrigerator In Spring
Our generation-old fridge sounds like it’s trying to tell us something--
that it needs defrosting?
The pomegranate--left for you--lost in the back--dried out--
the root beer extract--meant for me--lost in the back--outdated--
Yes, the old clunker
IS trying to tell us something--
Like the uneaten jalapeno preserves, probably still good, probably--
or the untried colbaga root, still not rotted, on the inside--
(Both of us on a diet)--
Along with the goat cheese I saved for you, which you
kept saving for me, none the better for aging--
Trying to tell us--
Not to mention the bygone dog and cat prescriptions, unusable--
the rolls and rolls and rolls of exposed college film, gone useless--
yesteryear’s legume inoculant and heirloom seeds, unused--
it’s time
That we had a child.
