Residents of the approximately 350 homes evacuated Sunday in Marshfield, Plainfield and East Montpelier downstream of the Marshfield Dam are not yet allowed to return to their homes.
GMP spokeswoman Dotty Schnure said crews will evaluate the situation at the dam before giving the OK for people to return home.
GMP made the decision to evacuate the area when the water levels in the dam were began to rise rapidly as a result of heavy rainfall from tropical storm Irene. Schnure said although the water levels stabilized overnight there was concern that the water would flow over top of the dam, compromising its structural integrity.
Luckily, the water did not reach that level and GMP did not need to release water into the winooski river in order to lower the water level.
Schnure said crews will evaluate the dam this morning and make the decision to allow people to return to their homes.
