The Pit in Rutland's downtown closed today
The downtown parking pit at the corner of Wales and Center streets will be closed today to make room for the third annual “Trash 2 Art” competition and related exhibits.
The event, run by Sustainable Rutland, is part of the final Friday Night Live of the season.
Final Friday Night Live tonight
The final Friday Night Live of the season will be held in downtown Rutland today where entertainment ranging from gymnastics to a trash-to-art contest will take place.
The evening begins at 6:15 p.m. on Center Street with performances from gymnasts and belly dancers. Community College of Vermont students will also perform a presentation involving veils, baskets & cane dancing and a tribal style improvisational piece.
At 7:30 p.m., Duane Carleton & the Backwoods Messiahs will take the main stage for two music sets ending at 10 p.m.
In the pit next to Wales Street the third annual Trash 2 Art contest will be on display from 6 to 9 p.m. The contest features a wide variety of artwork made from recycled materials.
And, as always, the rain or shine event will feature a wide variety of food, beverages and shopping opportunities at participating downtown businesses.
Sports report
Red Sox begin three-game series tonight in Seattle and Boston closer Jonathan Papelbon is having a stellar year as the last man out of the bullpen. He says he's fueled by "Haterade" this season. You know you were likely one of those people suggesting the Sox put Paps on the block and try to pick up a top-shelf catcher, a cache of great middle-relief or a solid right fielder. Come on, admit it. We have Bard in the pen. Give him the ball and see what he can do with that 100-mph heater in the ninth.
And Papelbon said that's perfect. Those doubters have driven him to succeed at an even higher level.
