U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders and representatives of Vermont seniors organizations will hold a press conference at 11 a.m. today in his Senate office in Burlington to announce legislation to strengthen Social Security and safeguard benefits for another 75 years.
The senator also will discuss threats to Social Security as a powerful congressional “super committee” looks for ways to achieve more than $1 trillion in deficit cuts this fall, according to a press release issued by the senator's staff.
Sanders is the founder of the Defending Social Security Caucus in the Senate, which now has 19 members, according to the press release.
“For 75 years, through good times and bad, Social Security has succeeded in keeping millions of senior citizens, widows, children, and the disabled out of poverty without contributing a dime to the federal deficit,” he said. “In fact, there is a $2.5 trillion surplus in the Social Security Trust Fund that is projected to grow to over $4 trillion by the year 2023.”
Sander's office is located at 1 Church St, second floor, in Burlington.
