BARRE — A Sheldon man convicted of snapping lewd photos of a girl in Barre was sentenced Monday.
Harold Crowe, 46, was sentenced in Barre criminal court to eight months to two years in prison — all suspended — with probation and told he must serve 200 hours of community service and abide by special sex offender probation. He also must pay $282 in fines and court surcharges.
In the plea agreement, Crowe, who was originally arraigned on a felony charge of lewd and lascivious conduct with a child, pleaded guilty to two counts of misdemeanor engagement in a prohibited act.
Crowe must successfully participate in a treatment program for sex offenders; submit to DNA testing; abide by restrictions on contact with minors and limitations on access to computers, the Internet and other recordable media; and submit to polygraph exams to determine if he is in compliance with the conditions.
According to court papers, in February 2009 police were first informed of an incident on Branch Street in Barre. One of the juveniles involved told police that while she was visiting her aunt and cousin, Crowe grabbed her shirt and bra and took photos on his cellphone.
The victim’s cousin told police Crowe had also pulled down the victim’s pants and taken a photo of her bare buttocks. Police obtained the phone and retrieved photos that matched the descriptions.
---- State Police were called to a home on Dog Pond Road in Woodbury at 2:48 p.m. after receiving a 911 call from Cassie Moller, a postal carrier, about a possible family fight. Moller told police that a woman run up to her asking for help while she was delivering mail and she saw bruises on the woman.
---- When they arrived, Trooper Jerry Partin was approached by the woman, who said that she had been strangled and assaulted by her boyfriend, Daniel Abbott Jr., 19.
---- The woman told Partin that she and Abbott had gotten into an argument and Abbott walked into the bathroom while she was showering and told her that he wanted to drown her, according to court documents.
---- The woman said that she did not want to be around Abbott if he was going to be mean to her so she attempted to leave, but Abbott blocked the door and disconnected the phone, according to court documents. The woman told Partin that Abbott lifted her up by her arms and put her on the couch, holding her down by her neck. She was able to get away when she bit Abbott, according to court documents.
---- The woman told Partin that Abbott chased after her and when the woman asked to use the phone again, Abbott allegedly pushed her down and began to strangle her, according to court documents. The woman was able to break free again and ran out of the house, where she saw the mail carrier, according to court documents.
---- Abbott told police that the woman was trying to kill herself and he was trying to restrain her, according to court documents. Abbott said that the bruises around the woman’s neck were caused when she tightened the hood of her sweatshirt around her neck in an attempt to kill herself, according to court records.
---- If found guilty on both counts, Abbott could face up to 16 years in prison or up to $30,000 in fines.
