SHAFTSBURY — State Police are investigating two more burglaries from Thursday, the latest in a rash of break-ins throughout Bennington County.
The latest two incidents happened between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Thursday, and were reported within a half hour of each other as residents returned home from work. Several piggy banks were stolen from a home on Cider Mill Road, and a tanzanite ring, loose change and some camera memory cards were taken from a Timbertrail Road home. In the first incident, thieves failed to smash open and remove a large gun safe.
Police believe the two burglaries are related through similarities in proximity, time frame and other evidence from the crime scene.
From the police press release:
The State Police has lately been receiving a large number of burglary complaints throughout Bennington County. Measures have been made to combat this problem to include additional detectives being assigned to assist with these investigations and combined efforts with law enforcement agencies throughout New York and Vermont. These efforts have led to numerous search warrants being executed, stolen property recovered and arrests being made. However, as this problem continues, police still need assistance from the public in solving these crimes. In addition to taking all measures necessary to secure their homes and valuables, police are asking citizens to be more vigilant and report any and all suspicious activity they encounter. This includes suspicious vehicles, people or circumstances. The use of field cameras, surveillance equipment and alarm systems have also been very helpful in these types of cases.
