Chester food drive set for Saturday

Chester Vermont Food and Donation Drive will be collecting, sorting, and distributing food and household items to help flood victims in Vermont for the Chester, Cavendish and Ludlow areas.
The drive will take place on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at the American Legion in Chester
Items badly needed include bottled water, bread, canned goods, baby supplies, cleaning supplies, toilet paper, coffee, canned food, towels, batteries, flashlights/lanterns, socks, trash bags and cleaning supplies, nonperishable food items, paper goods, and toiletries.
Volunteers for the event are asked to park at the Green Mountain Union High School, opposite the American Legion on Route 103, in Chester. For those bringing a truck or vehicle to make deliveries, please park at the site of the American Legion for loading.

Chester man, 77, badly hurt in accident

Larry Wright, 77, of Chester, was seriously injured Friday on High Street in Perkinsville when his excavator flipped over, pinning his arm to the ground. Workers were removing the overturned excavator and his jack-knifed pickup truck.

PERKINSVILLE — Larry Wright had helped a relative pull out a tractor stuck in a rain-sodden hayfield Friday, when the excavator tipped over on him, pinning his left arm to the ground, eyewitnesses said Friday.
Wright, 77, of Mattson Road in Chester, was pinned for about 20 minutes by the excavator, which he and his neighbor Andy Blais of Chester were loading, after the two men had successfully pulled out a tractor owned by Fred Mellish. Mellish’s tractor was stuck in the mud created by the 7 1/2 inches of rain from the remnants of Tropical Storm Irene.
Wright was first taken to Springfield Hospital and later transferred to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center because of the severity of his injuries.
Blais, who tried to get him free before the ambulance arrived, said Wright’s left arm was badly crushed near the elbow.

Four local bands will take the outdoor stage at Okemo’s Jackson Gore Inn courtyard for a benefit concert that will run from 3 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept, 2. The Joey Leone Band will play from 3-4:30 p.m., The Kind Buds take the stage from 4:30 to 6 p.m., followed by Gypsy Reel, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., and Chris Kleeman goes on at 7:30 p.m.
