Good Morning: Snow on the way, but some sun today

Good Morning, and we're still digging out from the Great Storm of 2012 in Rutland (that's sarcasm, BTW), but it looks like there's more white stuff on the way.

Up the hill a bit towards Killington and Pico, there's at least 6 inches, more the further up you go, but down in Rutland there's not much snow left on the ground after a sunny Sunday. We hear there was more snow up north as well, to the east of the mountains. 

As for today, we've got a forecast of increasing clouds and highs in the 30s, with scattered snow showers tonight. Tomorrow sunny, with a weather system coming into the state for Wednesday.

Good morning: Mostly sunny, a mild week ahead

Good morning - Every week we think winter may finally arrive. The betting has started on whether or not we'll get hit by a massive storm in late March to bookend the pre-Halloween dump that was the first and only real storm of the year thus far.

Well, not so fast. We're looking at highs in the 20s and maybe low 30s today, with sun - and a few clouds - across the state. The rest of the week will see highs in the 40s, clouds, and maybe some sleet or snow showers on Thursday and Friday. We'll also get some possible snow showers on Tuesday night into Wednesday. The forecast discussion, from our friends at the Fairbanks Museum in St. Johnsbury:

Thirty one years ago we were in the midst of a remarkable, extended spell of very mild weather. Record daily highs were set on seven consecutive days at St. Johnsbury; five of those seven remain on the books, including a monthly record maximum of 62 on Feb. 21. Multiple daily record highs were also set at Montpelier, Rutland and Burlington, and the monthly record highs of 61 and 62 at Montpelier and Burlington respectively, also set that year, remain intact.

Longtime residents will recall that sugaring began during that spell, even in the Northeast Kingdom. Nothing that memorable for weather today; just sunshine and seasonable coldness thanks to high pressure ridged a little to our west. The high will crest over us tonight, then slide offshore tomorrow. A developing southwest wind will pul milder air back into the region at that time ahead of the next wet weather system, an occluded front that'll bring scattered snow and rain showers Tuesday night and Wednesday.

Good morning - Light snow tapering off through the day

Good morning - It's in the 30s across much of the state, and we're expecting the temperature to stay up above freezing until later this evening. Although the Farmer's Almanac says we're supposed to get a major storm by Monday, it looks like we'll be spared - there's a big one down south, but it's not likely to turn our way. The forecast discussion, from our friends at the Fairbanks Museum in St. Johnsbury:

A light, spring-like fall of mixed rain and snow on valley floors and sticky snow over higher elevations will taper off to scattered rain and snow showers by mid-morning as an occluded front passes to our east. Westerly wind behind the front will pull cool and moist air over the ridgelines this afternoon and tonight, with scattered snow showers the result, primarily over the northern Green Mountains. No big storms are in sight for us, though a vigorous system will cross the southeast US over the weekend, bringing some severe weather to its south, and perhaps moderate snow to its north over the central Appalachians.

This weekend should have some flurries and partial clouds on Saturday morning, with temperatures staying in the 20s and 30s, overnight lows in the teens. Sunday's expected to be mostly sunny, and in the 20s.

 

Good Morning - Fair weather, possible rain on the way

Good morning, and I hope your Valentine's Day goes well, whatever you have planned (or whatever you forgot to plan).

Today it should be partly cloudy, then increasing clouds. Milder with highs in the lower 30s. South to southwest winds of 10-15 mph. Tonight: Mostly cloudy. Lows in the mid to upper 20s. Light south winds. Tomorrow: Partly sunny. Milder, with highs 37-42. South to southwest winds of 5-10 mph.

There's a storm coming our way on Thursday, but it will probably be just rain - maybe a touch of snow on Friday, though.

Today is a holiday best spent on warm moments with loved ones. But on this date in 2007, legions of us were instead out in the cold shoveling a fresh 2-3 feet of snow dumped by a significant Nor’easter.
Such snowstorms have been non-existent here this winter season, and the next week will be no exception. High pressure sliding out into the Atlantic from the southeastern states will amount to fair weather for us today. There is a weak storm over the Mississippi Valley though, also heading east. It will weaken with time, resulting in just some added cloud cover tonight and tomorrow.
A more significant system will arrive late Thursday, but this looks to be a mainly rain event.

Good morning - Cloudy with a chance of flurries

Good morning, I hope you're ready for Valentine's Day tomorrow. If you're not, well, good luck.

The week is shaping up to be a more typical winter week than we've had, well, than we've had most of the winter. Wait - what's a typical winter week? Well, forget what I just said.

Highs in the 20s today in the north and in the low 30s south, with a chance of flurries and snow showers. The flurries will be largely restricted to the mountains in the south. For the rest of the week, you'll find lows in the 20s, and highs in the 30s and 40s, with a scattered chance for snow showers and maybe some rain later in the week.

Good morning - Quiet week for weather ahead

Good morning. For some of us, it's a cloudy beginning to a bad week - since the Pats lost to the Giants yesterday. Again. Well, let's not dwell on it...

This week is looking pretty calm for weather, with nothing more nasty than some partly cloudy days until Friday, when we might get a bit of snow. Today it will get up into the high 30s or low 40s. Tomorrow you can expect highs in the upper 20s up north, and into the 40s down south, with lows tonight into the teens or single digits. It should be mostly sunny across the state.

The highs will be in the high 20s and low 30s north, and ten degrees warmer in the south for the rest of the week, with nighttime temps dipping into the teens and single digits.

Good morning - Snow overnight; more expected all week

Well, you've probably seen it by now, but there's snow out there. For Central Vermont today, expect partly sunny weather with scattered flurries, highs from 19-24 and a NW wind from 10-15 mph. Down south, it should be mostly sunny. There will be wide-ranging highs from the mid-20s over ridgelines east of Rutland, to near 35 near Brattleboro and Vernon. Wind from the northwest, 10-15 mph.

The potent mid-level disturbance and weak surface low pressure system that brought snow showers and squalls to the state last night is now offshore, and high pressure will provide partly to mostly sunny conditions, and seasonably cold conditions today.  One to four inches of snow fell in most areas, with localized amounts of 6-8” along the spine of the central Green Mountains eastward through portions of Orange and Windsor counties. The fresh powder will provide an excellent radiative surface and facilitate a rapid drop in temperature the first half of the night, but the cold will be short-lived. A warm front will develop just south of the state by tomorrow morning and lift slowly northward through tomorrow night. Light snow will develop to the north of the front and will spread over the state tomorrow. By Wednesday the front will be near the international border and precipitation will change to showers of mixed precipitation, then rain.

There were 35 heating degree days yesterday, for a total of 3,945 since July 1 of 2011. That compares to 4,547 for the same period last year...

Tonight, expect it to be clear early, then increasing clouds. Chance for light snow or flurries late. Lows 5-12. Wind diminishing to light and variable. On Tuesday: Occasional light snow. Accumulation 2” or less. Highs 26-30. Light SE-S wind.

Momentum for Barre open house rescheduled due to weather

Momentum for Barre has cancelled their open house at the Barre Opera House slated for this evening, due to weather.

The event has been rescheduled for Jan. 26 at 7 p.m.

 

Good Morning - Cold, with a chance of cold

Good morning, and it looks like winter is still here for the New Year, with temperatures in the single digits in northern and central Vermont, and the teens and twenties across southern Vermont. It is, however, forecast to be much warmer today than yesterday up north - in the 20s across central Vermont, and in the 30s across the south. It's unfortunately looking like there will be some weather for the New Years weekend - rain, snow, ice, you name it, as temps go up above freezing and some weather patterns move in from the west.

Welcome, 2012. But, we did have great news yesterday - the last state highway closed by Irene, Rte. 107, reopened for traffic. It's an engineering marvel - they've built it for "Irene + 2", or Irene flooding plus 2 feet, and they did it in 4 months to the day. Great work.

I-89 Northbound has re-opened

Traffic on I-89 north and south ground to a halt on Wednesday afternoon, with icy road conditions, blowing snow, and several accidents. There were also a lot of drivers getting out of their cars and rubbernecking.

BARRE – Emergency personnel responded to several accidents on Tuesday night and Wednesday due to icy and snowy roads.
I-89 Northbound has reopened as of 6:38 p.m., according to the Vermont Emergency Management Facebook page. The highway had been closed between exit 10 in Waterbury through the Bolton Flats before exit 11 in Richmond because of multiple accidents.
Several other accidents were reported along roadways in Central and Northern Vermont, and poor driving conditions are reported across Central Vermont. Route 64 in Williamstown between I-89 and Rte. 14 is also closed to truck traffic.
