Calling City Hall is a little futile today.
Friday was the last day for City Hall's telephone operator, Betty Huestis, whose position was one of three eliminated in the new budget. She was supposed to be replaced by an automated answering system that will direct calls to the various departments in the building, but that has yet to happen.
Instead, after about five rings you get a voicemail of the mayor explaining that work is being done to the phone system this week.
This transition has been a long time coming though. Shouldn't the work have been done prior to the start of work today?
UPDATE -- 7/14 12:34 PM
The mayor's answering message still greets callers to City Hall this afternoon.
According to the mayor yesterday afternoon, the system is supposed to be up and running today.
And as of 1 p.m. yesterday, there were 44 calls into the system - only 20 of which resulted in messages, which were being forwarded to the appropriate departments, the mayor said.
