College to evaluate submitted proposals

The proposals from developers interested in providing the Community College of Vermont with a new Rutland facility are in and under review, according to Barbara Martin, dean of administration for CCV.

Vermont State Colleges did not hold a public opening to reveal what they've received.

"We're going to review them in the next month," Martin said last week. "We have started to look at them … we're going to look at them and evaluate them based on many different criteria.

"We may reject any and all of these and need to ask for additional proposals, or we may be able to work with some folks and go from there," she said. "We're very excited about it."

This evening the city aldermen will get their chance to meet with the Police Commission and weigh in on how they believe information on incidents such as the recently revealed child pornography investigation should be shared.

According to the meeting warning, Board President David Allaire has set an agenda for the 6 p.m. City Hall meeting that includes but is not limited to discussion of the Police Department's computer and Internet

Support for social agencies tepid

It's not unusual for one or two social agencies to fail at the polls on Town Meeting Day, but six of 10? What happened? Faced with significant tax increases everywhere else, did the voters decide charitable giving was one place where they could pull back - or that it would make a significant difference on their tax bills?

Voter turnout was (relatively) high on Tuesday, with 3,961 people casting ballots.

Here are some of the high points:

• In the aldermen's race, Daniel White Sr. finished well outside of the top five, seat-earning slots. Still, his finish was the best he's had in his four campaigns for aldermen. Vote totals as follows:

  Dave Allaire - 2,689

  Edward Larson - 2,555

  William Notte - 2,418

  Sharon Davis - 2,359

  Christopher Robinson - 2,200

  Daniel White Sr. - 1,153

• After all the hoopla and serious talk about voting down the municipal budget, it passed. Narrowly. Go figure. I'm becoming less surprised by the contrast between perception and reality in Rutland

It's Town Meeting Day again. Boy, these elections sneak up fast.

I voted at the American Legion around 10:45 a.m., where aldermanic candidate Ed Larson was standing outside the entrance along with Jim Miles and Mike Robillard of the city fire department and Dan Amsberry, assistant director of the Rutland Free Library.

According to the ballot collection machine, 230 people had voted by the time I submitted my ballot. According to former Herald city editor Kendall Wild, about 290 people had voted at Christ the King when he was there around 11:30 a.m.
