As he passed by at the rail event yesterday, Rep. Welch pointed at me and said "I still haven't read my book."
The book is Jonathan Franzen's "Freedom," which he made a show of buying at the Book King while doing an event downtown last year. The next time I spoke to him, I asked what he thought of it, figuring it would fill a blog post, but he'd been side-tracked by the new biography of Crazy Horse. Ditto the next time after that. I guess this time he saw me coming.
Pestering congressmen aside, I wasn't sure what to make of that event. The conventional wisdom seems to be that an official of Rae's stature showing up in Rutland is a good sign, but there were so many supposed good signs about our last couple applications that skepticism seems in order.
That said, I've long been enthusiastic about the idea of taking the train to Burlington and I'm even more enthusiastic about taking it to Boston. A connection to Montreal would put me over the moon. My fingers are crossed that yesterday's show does us some good.
