"Just what we need, another bar. Now if we could only get another pizza place and another sandwich shop."
-someone who will remain nameless commenting on the liquor license application for Mandingos, formerly Friar's Tavern.
And, while we're at it, "Mandingos?" Really?
"I was talking with my friend," owner Shaun Arnado said. "He said the name, it sounded kind of funny. We're hoping to have some fun with it. I'm hoping to get kind of a chuckle and not offend anyone too bad. It's tongue-in-cheek."
For those wondering what the big deal is, "Mandingo," in addition to the title of one of the least well-regarded studio films of all time, is a term with racial and sexual connotations that are somewhat difficult to describe in a family newspaper. Google it if you must, but think twice before doing so from work.
Arnado said he hopes to open Monday and is shooting for a neighborhood bar sort of feel.
