Well, Shawn Pemrick wants to. He has sent a letter to Mayor Louras pointing out that he ran for a seat earlier this year and was the top vote-getter among the failed candidates, missing out on a seat by 83 votes.
Pemrick acknowledged that he and Mayor Louras "have not agreed on many issues," but said healthy debate is what will move the city forward.
Sean Sargeant said yesterday he was preparing a recommendation of his own for the seat, but would not say more.
There is a certain logic to appointing someone who already ran and came so close to winning, though one could also argue that the voters already rejected such a candidate and that the mayor should pick someone else.
Another political consideration is whether Louras wants to use the appointment to reach out to, for lack of a better term, Pemrick's faction within the city or if he wants to choose someone more closely aligned with his own sensibilities.
It will be interesting to see who else comes forward.
I don't think the argument that a candidate who ran for office and was not elected was rejected holds much water. I don't know of anyone that voted against any of the candidates for aldermen.
On the other hand four of the eleven aldermen did vote to reject Ejay as the head of the recreation department.
