I'm working on a story about local preparations for Hurricane Irene. It will appear in tomorrow's paper, and we're already compiling helpful tips elsewhere on this website.
I've been skeptical about the storm myself -- it seems like by the time they get to us, hurricanes aren't much worse than a heavy thunderstorm -- but the more I look at the radar the more I start wondering where my flashlights are.
We survived the great Nor'icane of '07 and we've survived more ice storms that I can count, so I still doubt Irene is going to be the apocalypse. I guess we'll see where we are on Monday.
Gordon, Any chance you could do a piece on how the transit center and the properties along Merchant's Row fared with the storm? Past storms have been a disaster in those areas.

The transit center stayed pretty much dry.
Bruce Edwards was talking to local businesses today, including the downtown ones. I've been busy elsewhere, but whatever he found should be in tomorrow's paper.
