Steve Costello reports today that this year's blood drive had the most first-time donors in the event's history. He says 418 of the 1,855 donors had never given blood before. Last year, he said, that number was 250.
The Red Cross tends to make a big deal of first-time donors because only a small percentage of people eligible to give blood actually do so. Costello noted that they made a specific effort to recruit first-time donors.
