I'm seated right under the WJJR speaker, and when they started playing an a cappella version of "Hungry Like the Wolf," I decided to go bug Bill Carris for a while.
"I try to give twice a year, but it doesn't always work out," the outgoing state senator said. "I've been stunned by how quick it is an how well-organized. If everybody knew it, we'd have a lot more people here, I think."
If Rutland breaks the record, Carris said Steve Costello will deserve a lot of the credit.
"I don't know that we'll ever find somebody who can organize it better than Steve," he said.
When I tried to see if I could get Carris to endorse any of the people jockeying for the appointment to fill out his term, he told me his son, Poultney lawyer Tracy Carris, has thrown his hat in the ring. There had been rumors about Carris' daughters that the senator denied, but he had not mentioned anything about his son when I spoke to him last week.
"I didn't know," Carris said. "This was quiet and suddent. It kind of came as a surprise to me."
Not that the younger Carris, who is president of the board of directors at the Chaffee and been involved in the planning commission and economic development efforts in Poultney.
"It's been breakfast table talk since I could understand him," Carris said.
